In honor of the Smithsonian giving away a free day at their museums, maybe there’s something we can all do to repay our local museums.  Museum funding, especially for smaller museums, is really difficult. Even the major established institutions, unless they are well-endowed, are having a hard time figuring out how they are going to continue their operations.  Some museums are being forced to make the hard decision between shutting down for good or selling off portions of their collections to private collectors.  That means, we, the public lose access to timeless art, culture, and knowledge.  Read the rest of this post...

If your family is ever in Denver, Colorado and you are looking for a fun and educational way to spend the day, then head over to the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. Our family recently made a trip to the museum to check out Expedition Health, the newest exhibit that opened last spring, plus return to some of our favorites such as Space Odyssey, Prehistoric Journey, Gems and Minerals and Egyptian Mummies. At the Five Hens, we love museums and this Saturday, September 26th, the Smithsonian Magazine is doing us all good by hosting a FREE Museum Day. That’s right. Compliments of the Smithsonian Magazine, you can enjoy free general admission for you and a guest to literally hundreds of museums and cultural venues nationwide on Saturday (and some on Sunday too). To get your free admission, you’ll need to present a Museum Day admission card at participating Museum Day locations.
