When times are good or bad, happy or sad (sorry to invoke Tina Turner images there) one thing is a constant for most families…managing finances. We’re no financial wizards, but any way we could find to save money or make money or both, we thought it would be worth sharing with everyone out there. We’d love to hear your ideas on the subject too. We could always use good advice.
The Better Vacation

Although summer is still months away, my husband and I are planning our vacation. Maybe it’s just because we are cold, but it’s fun thinking about summer adventures. A couple years ago we drove from Colorado to South Carolina, and had a blast. This year, we are planning to go the other way: California. Now that we’ve decided on a destination, we are taking the next logical step and locating a place to stay. We plan to stay in the same area for a week, so the best place for us, and maybe for you on your trip, is a vacation rental.

We all love a good party, and what better reason to celebrate than our child being a year older? But where are the backyard parties with a few games, balloons, and a homemade cake (I’ll admit several of my cakes could be on the Cake Wrecks blog)? Many of today’s birthday celebrations have grown into elaborate events. This year, we decided something had to change!
In the past few years our weekends have included a birthday party about three out of four weekends a month, and if the frequency isn’t overwhelming enough, certainly the surrounding venue, entertainment and number of gifts are!

Personal finances. It seems to be a topic in many households these days. Economically, it is a very scary time for many people. And lots of people are taking a serious look at their budget these days. Are we saving enough for retirement, emergencies and our children’s education? How can we save the proper amount for all of these things and pay for groceries, housing, and necessities?

Everyone seems to be on a budget these days. We could all use new ideas on how to save money. Recently I found out, if a product stops working before it should, you might be able to get it replaced (I do not save receipts).
Last week, my son’s LeapFrog Leapster game cartridge stopped working. I called their toll-free number and they agreed to send me a new one, if I mailed them the old one. I just saved $24.00.
