The Painted Hen enjoys exploring her creative side, whether making Halloween costumes or watching a beautiful sunset with her Rooster of 12 years. She has two chicks (boys ages 6 and 3) who can always make her laugh with their knock-knock jokes and dance party moves. The Painted Hen was a geologist in an earlier chapter of her life and still has fun camping and hiking with her flock. Turns out she has passed her love of collecting rocks and other treasures on to her chicks – much to the dismay of her laundry machines.Get the RSS feed for all of the Painted Hen's posts here.

Kids sick at school already? Try this Temporal Scanner
September 1, 2009 Posted by The Painted Hen
No, this isn’t a post about alien brain scanners – although that might really make it a hit with your kids! Not even two weeks into school, my six year old has the fun trio of sneezes, stuffy nose and sore throat. Since I tend to lean toward medicine in moderation, being able to check my child’s temperature was always a necessary task that involved two adults. One to hold the thermometer in their mouth and the other assigned to “child entertainment” to prevent said thermometer from being repeatedly spit out. My kids were born with ticklish armpits, so those readings were just as much fun. It was difficult to GET a reading, much less be able to trust it.
We started using the EXERGEN Temporal Artery Thermometer six months ago and now my kids ASK to have their temperature taken! You just hold the button and slide the scanner from the center to the side of their forehead. That’s it. No waiting, no squirming. You can even take their temperature while they’re sleeping! The temperature reading is taken from the temporal artery and remains on display until you take another reading or turn it off.
Ready, Set….Time to Let Go (of Mommy)
September 1, 2009 Posted by The Painted Hen

I thought we were ready when my oldest went to preschool for the first time. Not only was he a cheerful, laid-back kid who liked making new friends at playgrounds, but we had done the Mommy & Me classes and he even had fun at the preschool open house. We were set, right? Nope. Thirty minutes into the class I went back to his room to take a peek before I left – and there is my little guy, tears streaming, looking terrified and refusing to budge from his “circle time” spot. All the other kids are having a great time playing instruments in a parade, my guy normally loves this stuff. What went wrong? What did I forget to prepare him for? Nothing. He was learning to let go of ME.
